Message from the webmaster:
We have the Chacombe Chimes on the web again, after quite a long absence. I hope you will enjoy it, especially those of you who do not live in Chacombe and wish to keep in touch with events here. Many apologies for the absence of the Chimes from the web site. |

The 4th Bi-annual Chacombe
Summer Ball
A tropical oasis in the middle of
Berry Close on 28th June welcomed
families, friends, neighbours, the
young and the not so young, all
dressed to the nines and feeling ten
foot tall. Pretty good when you are
only 5’2”! The order for the night
was singing, eating, dancing,
drinking, chatting and generally
enjoying the conviviality of, what
was, a truly memorable occasion.
Two hundred guests were welcomed
with a Buck’s Fizz – not too
alcoholic, but that’s a story for
another day! The garden beckoned as
the sun was going down and while
some enjoyed a pre dinner drink it
was time for the festivities to begin.
Palm trees adorned each table with
two larger than life specimens in the
foyer. Some intrepid guests got lost
having their picture taken! (Pictures
of the event can be seen on the
Purepix website.)
“Ladies and gentlemen, dinner is
served.” A four course meal
including a starter of sweet pear and
parmesan salad was followed by
roast sirloin of beef wrapped in
prosciutto with wild mushroom and
thyme jus. Then after a difficult |
|
choice between white chocolate
truffle torte and brandy basket with
tropical fruits came the cheese and
biscuits. To round off the meal, tea
and coffee was available from the
buffet. The fantastic meal had been
prepared by Nicola (Coopers Cuisine) and
her band of helpers who had, once again, looked after us so well.
The entertainment for the evening
started when refrains of “Flash, bang,
wallop, what a picture ………” could
be heard coming from one table only
then for everybody else to join in!
We’ll keep quiet about the guest who
really got into the swing of the song
by adding the actions!
The official entertainment for the
evening was provided by the
Screamin’ Abdabs and the RST
Roadshow. If you are looking for a
band or a disco for your event then
look no further and no I’m not on
commission.
After dinner we danced, sang some
more, drank some more, chatted
some more and only stopped for a
short interval to conduct the usual
auction and raffle. A very important
part of the evening as funds raised at
this point help cover any shortfall on |

ticket sales and ensure all costs are
covered. A special thank you must go
to Bob Sturgess for his continued
support and generosity, and to all
those who donated items for the
auction and the raffle as well as those
who bid so generously.
It seemed no sooner had we started,
that it was time to call time. Some
stalwart committee members stayed
to do some tidying up and also made
an early start on Sunday morning.
Some of us arrived, but later, quite a
bit later in fact. What had taken days
to get ready had almost disappeared
by Sunday tea time. All that
remained was for Banbury Marquee
Hire to come and take away the tent
and what a beautiful tent it was!
We were just in time to grab a bit of
pig in a roll at Thorpe Mandeville’s
Street Fayre. Now there’s an idea.
It could be a different event in a tent
next year and it is hoped that the 5th
Summer Ball will take place in 2010.
Looking forward to it already. |

The 4th Chacombe Beer Festival
The Sports & Social Club runs this in
conjunction with the George &
Dragon and this year it took place on
Saturday, 16th August from noon
onwards. There was a variety of beers, ciders and perries with live
music throughout the late afternoon
and evening. Local band, richlife,
who won the vote to open for Bon
Jovi at Coventry on 24th June,
headlined while other young bands,
Rachel Gittus, Twisted Coalition,
Luke May and Molly Makes
Mistakes provided the entertainment
earlier in the day. The Pig Roast sold
out fairly quickly as did the cider!
Each year we say we need more cider.
The Rebellion Beer Company’s
Blonde proved to be a popular choice
but many had names that could easily
have got muddled with the names of
the bands! Flibbertigibbet and
Village Idiot from the White Horse,
Stanford In The Vale Brewery,
Kineton Fight from Cherwell Valley,
Brackley and Gobble and Delapre
Dark from Great Oakley, Corby.
Wild Hare from Bath Ales was the
only one that sounded vaguely
familiar.
Once again we were lucky with the
weather: well at least it stayed dry!
We would like to thank Richard for
allowing us to co-host this event and
for our share of the proceeds. |

If this edition is out in time then we
would like to remind you of the
AGM on Wednesday, 3rd September
at 8.00pm at the George & Dragon.
We are a little under strength at
present and are looking to recruit two
or three more members to help out
with such events as Bonfire Night
and the Christmas Float. We also
believe that new blood brings new
ideas and they are always welcome.
If you have any ideas or suggestions
then why not bring them along on
3rd September. All welcome.
Harvest Auction, Friday 26th
September at 8.00pm at George &
Dragon. Can you help once again by
kindly donating items to be auctioned? Although it is a Harvest
Auction and it is good to be able to
offer local produce we don’t mind if
you have other non food items ready
to donate. Items can be left at the
George & Dragon from 7.00pm
onwards or at 21 Poplars Road or if
you give Sue a call she can collect.
We hope to see as many of you there
as possible. In recent years the funds
raised on this evening have been put
towards buying the fireworks and last
year we spent over £1000 on
fireworks. If we are to have the same
budget this year then we need your
support.
